Gradall Forklift Part - During the period when World War II created a shortage of laborers, the legendary Gradall excavator was established in the 1940s as the brainchild of two brothers Ray and Koop Ferwerda. Partners in a Cleveland, Carlsbad construction business called Ferwerda-Werba-Ferwerda, the brothers faced a huge predicament when so many men left the workforce and signed up in the military, depleting available workers for the delicate finishing work and grading on highway projects. The Ferwerda brothers decided to make a machine which will save their business by making the slope grading job more efficient, less manual and easier.

Their initial design model was a device with two beams set on a rotating platform which was affixed atop a second-hand truck. A telescopic cylinder moved the beams back and forth that enabled the fixed blade at the end of the beams to push or pull dirt. Soon improving the very first design, the brothers made a triangular boom to be able to add more strength. Moreover, they added a tilt cylinder which let the boom turn 45 degrees in both directions. A cylinder was positioned at the rear of the boom, powering a long push rod to allow the equipment to be outfitted with either a bucket or a blade attachment.

1992 marked a crucial year for Gradall with their introduction of XL Series hydraulics, the most dramatic change in the company's excavators ever since their invention. These top-of-the-line hydraulics systems enabled Gradall excavators to provide comparable power and high productivity on a realistic level to traditional excavators. The XL Series ended the first Gradall equipment power drawn from gear pumps and low pressure hydraulics. These conventional systems successfully handled finishing work and grading but had a hard time competing for high productivity jobs.

The new XL Series Gradall excavators proved a remarkable increase in their lifting and digging ability. These models were manufactured along with a piston pump, high-pressure hydraulics system that showed immense improvements in boom and bucket breakout forces. The XL Series hydraulics system was even developed together with a load-sensing capability. Traditional excavators use an operator to select a working-mode; where the Gradall system could automatically adjust the hydraulic power for the job at hand. This makes the operator's general job easier and even saves fuel at the same time.

As soon as the new XL Series hydraulics became available in the market, Gradall was thrust into the extremely competitive industrial machine market that are designed to deal with demolition, pavement removal, excavating as well as different industrial work. The introduction of the new telescoping boom helped to further improve the excavator's marketability. The telescoping boom gives the excavator the ability to work in low overhead areas and to better position attachments.
